Keeping Up with Kinship Q2 2019

Kinship provides quality mentoring for youth who face significant economic and social barriers, ages 5 to 18, living in the greater metropolitan area. The program connects children and youth with caring adults, couples and families. Furthermore, Kinship nurtures positive self-esteem and character development, strengthens connections to school and community, and is respectful & welcoming of all faiths.

MEET A MATCH!

Zendaya & Lanoira Collage.png

Mentor Lanoira & mentee Zendaya are celebrating 4 months as a Kinship Match. Lanoira & Zendaya connected with their Kinship coordinator, Roz Tsopfack. Always curious about how the relationship is growing, we were able to check in and reflect on the past 4 months of their relationship:

Roz: Why did you want to start mentoring?
Lanoira: Growing up I had a cousin that had a mentor and seeing how inspiring that mentor was for him I wanted to provide the same for a youth in my community.
R: What have been one or two of your most memorable outings/adventures?
L: Of course Sky Zone because we have so much fun jumping around and chasing each other but also taking Zendaya to the roller garden because it was something I could teach her to do.
R: What would you say is the best attribute about your Kinship friend? Explain why you shared what you did?
L: I would go with her energy level because I enjoy how present she is in every moment.
R: What is something you've each come to learn about each other since you've been matched?
L: I've learned that Zendaya is smart and has a great personality.
R: If you knew someone who was thinking about mentoring a kinship youth, but they had doubts about being able to do it, what would you tell them?
L: Mentoring a youth helps them realize their value and you are ultimately are changing someones life for the better.

Roz: Why did you want a mentor?
Zendaya: I wanted a Mentor to have someone to talk to outside of my siblings and also to go more fun places.
R: What have been on or two of your most memorable outings/adventures?
Z: Most memorable outings would be biking and going to sky zone.
R: What would you say is the best attribute about your Kinship friend? Explain why you shared what you did?
Z: My mentor has a cool car.
R: What is something you've each come to learn about each other since you've been matched?
Z: Learned that my mentor is funny and nice.
R: If you knew someone who was thinking about mentoring a kinship youth, but they had doubts about being able to do it, what would you tell them? Z: Mentors bring you fun places and you can learn more about them.
